About this event
In this presentation, Nicole will share some of her research, including including how bees create comb, from the deposition of wax scales to the final structure. The use of CT images allows Nicole to track the evolution of trapped air bubbles and changes in cell wall thickness over time. Her more recent work showcases how bees repair small holes in their comb structure.
Nicole Balog is a PhD student at Purdue University in Indiana where she studies materials engineering, a field that delves into the fundamental properties of materials, including metals, ceramics, polymers and composites, to understand how to better use and improve them. She interned at NASA studying materials used in rocket ships before becoming interested in the engineering acumen of Apis mellifera.
